Michigan's Highest Honor for the Flint Institute of Arts
The Flint Institute of Arts was honored at the 2007 Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture as the recipient of the Arts/Cultural Organization Award. This is the highest award a cultural organization can receive in the state of Michigan.
The event was sponsored by ArtServe and took place at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Governor Granholm was a featured speaker and presenter, and FIA Director John Henry accepted the award on behalf of the Flint Institute of Arts. This is the first time the Flint Institute of Arts has been nominated for and won this prestigious award.
The FIA was described by the Governor’s Awards peer review panel as “the epicenter for the visual arts in Genesee County”. The FIA is the second largest art museum in Michigan with a collection of over 7,000 works, education programs serve over 30,000 children annually, and its museum art school is the 10th largest in the nation!
Now at the Flint Institute of Art through September 28:
ED MCGOWIN: Name Change.
Ed McGowin legally changed his name 12 times and has continued to create unique works of art under these different guises for the past three and a half decades. McGowin devised “The Name Change Project,” to challenge the conventional notion of a solo artist’s work following a “ linear chain-link model with each creation leading logically to the next.” McGowin believes these different identities allow for a broader approach to his body of work, without tying it to past history or future expectations. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, sculptures, and installations.
