Stuff For Kids

Discover over 26,000 acres of county parks, and state parks and recreation areas in and around Genesee County. Beat the heat and go swimming and boating in our many area lakes, without the long drive up north! Mom and Dad will love saving money on gas!

Go swimming at Bluebell Beach and also enjoy a barrier-free Splash Pad! County park beaches also include Buttercup Beach and Linden County Park. Boat launches can also be found at Buell Lake County Park, Mott Lake, and Walley Pike Boat Launch. Area state parks and recreation areas also have excellent beaches and boat launches. Check out Holly Recreation Area, Seven Lakes State Park, Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area, and Ortonville Recreation Area.

Ever try Disc Golf? It's like golf, only you play it with a frisbee! Check out Goldenrod Disc Golf Course, part of the Genesee County Parks, and Holly Woods Disc Golf Course at the Holly Recreation Center.

If biking or mountain biking is your thing, you'll love our rolling hills, and beautiful scenery and park land. Many Genesee County Parks offer 1-2 mile trails, as well as a BMX track at Richfield County Park. (Sanctioned by the National Bicycle League.)

Holly Recreation Area,
one of several area State Parks, has 23 miles of biking trails in five loops around the Holdridge Lakes Area. The trail was designed, built and maintained by the Holly/Flint Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association. An additional 8 miles of biking trails are also now available on the Wilderness Trail, surrounding McGinnis Lake Campground. Seven Lakes State Park also has mountain biking on a beautiful 5 mile trail.

Don't miss the Annual Seven Lakes State Park Balloon Race on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27, weather permitting, in the Fenton/Holly area. Balloons will be launched at 7 p.m., as the winds allow, on both days. Other activities during the festival include tethered balloon rides, balloon, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, picnic areas, music, food, canoes, paddle boats, biking, contests, and more. For ages 10 and up, from July 18 through August 9, enjoy Flint Youth Theatre's Arthur, King of Britain. Based on the novel, THE PENDRAGON, by Catherine Christian, it's the perennial story of King Arthur, set against the backdrop of the Dark Ages. Click here for tickets.

For railroad history and fun, it's a short drive to the Michigan Railroad History Museum in Durand. How important were railroads to Michigan in the early 1900's? Very! At Durand Union Station during its peak, 42 passenger trains, 22 mail trains, and 78 freight trains passed through the Station each day! Find the world's largest quarter-size railroad at Junction Valley Railroad, just west of Frankenmuth, in Bridgeport. Enjoy a 2 mile quarter-size train ride through custom-made buildings, bridges, tunnels, trestle, and more. All the buildings, bridges, trains, etc. were designed, engineered, and built on-site by William A. Stenger and family.

Now showing at Genesee County's new IMAX, Sea Monsters 3D: A Prehistoric Adventure, a film by National Geographic!! Go back in time and discover the incredible variety of marine life that lived in the vast oceans of the Cretaceous period.
